The IGA is committed to helping people identify problem gambling warning signs and to directing them toward help. We work with treatment providers statewide and other organizations to further prevention, awareness and access. Our members also work directly with the Iowa Gambling Treatment Program, which contracts with 11 local agencies to provide problem gambling prevention, treatment and recovery support services in 11 regions of Iowa.
The IOWA GAMBLING TREATMENT PROGRAM (IGTP) works to reduce the harm caused by problem gambling by funding a range of services for Iowans. Treatment for problem gambling is available for problem gamblers, concerned persons and family.
Services include:
- Outpatient counseling (including group, individual and e-therapy options)
- Financial counseling (including budgeting and debt reduction plans)
- Recovery support services (client-selected supports and services intended to enhance and further
recovery)
- Targeted prevention and education services (schools, community groups, employers, casinos and at-risk groups)
- A statewide help line (1-800-BETS OFF) and website provide problem gambling information and referral services
Goals:
- Ensure gaming tax funds are earmarked by the state for the Iowa Gambling Treatment Program
- Increase public awareness of resources
- Heighten public knowledge about treatment accessibility
- Improve understanding of problem gambling in the context of current public policy as it is formulated by the legislature and other policy-making bodies
The IGA takes its responsibilities to its members and state residents seriously. We are proud that Iowa voters have consistently supported gaming and Iowans' freedom to choose how to spend their budgeted entertainment dollars. The IGA encourages everyone to spend with their head, not over it!
