The Iowa Gaming Association (IGA) is proud to host the state’s first Women Leaders in Gaming Summit on May 14, 2014 at Prairie Meadows Conference Center in Altoona, Iowa. The Summit is a gathering of the preeminent women in the gaming industry—along with selected leaders in government, philanthropy and media—for wide-ranging and inspiring discussions.

This event will feature an array of powerhouse leaders and changemakers, including Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, Senator Pam Jochum, Representative Linda Upmeyer and Virginia McDowell the President and CEO at Isle of Capri Casinos. Over 150 attendees from casinos around the state will be in attendance. While this event is not open to the public, the IGA will release key takeaways and snapshots from the Summit post-event. Janae Sternberg, Vice President of Finance at Ceasar’s Entertainment hopes, “the attendees will see the variety of opportunities gaming offers for career advancement.”

The Summit provides an opportunity to showcase some of the women leaders who have been successful in rising through the ranks to the executive level positions. In fact, over 52% of the 18 commercial casino workforce is female. Plus, 44% of those at the supervisor/manager positions are women, as are 37% in positions at the executive team level. According to, women in the United States currently only hold 4.8 percent of Fortune 500 CEO positions and 4.8 percent of Fortune 1000 CEO positions.

It is the hope of the panelists that attendees are able to walk away from the event feeling empowered and inspired to succeed. Nancy Ballenger, Vice President and General Manager at Isle Casino Hotel Bettendorf, wants the women in attendance to learn “to better support other women in their organizations and to take on new challenges.” Along those same lines, panelist Sharon Haselhoff, the General Manager at Grand Falls Casino Resort, wants to encourage the women “to believe in yourself, network, work hard, play hard and never be afraid to ask questions.”

The Women Leaders in Gaming Summit is generously supported by the IGA leaders for further encouragement and support of Iowa women in gaming.
